EXPERIENCE SINGAPORE THROUGH TEA

A sensory cultural journey - Explore local flavours, tea stories and crafting.
This module provides learners with practical experience in preparing three popular local beverages: Teh Tarik, Teh Limau, and Singapore Bubble Tea. Learners will practise essential techniques such as pulling tea for texture, balancing tea with citrus flavours, and preparing milk tea with pearls. The focus is on understanding ingredients, flavour balance, and basic preparation methods. By the end of the module, learners will be able to confidently recreate these beverages while gaining insight into local drink culture.
Learners will be introduced to the foundations of kopitiam tea, including traditional brewing methods and the reasons it differs in taste and preparation from Western-style tea. The course explains common kopitiam orders such as teh, teh O, and teh C, highlighting how ingredients like condensed milk, evaporated milk, sugar, and water influence flavour, richness, and strength. It also introduces commonly used local customisation terms, enabling learners to confidently tailor drinks to their personal taste preferences and order tea like a local.
Learners will develop an understanding of how Singapore’s multicultural roots—shaped by Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western influences—have influenced its everyday tea culture and local flavour profiles. The course explores how these cultural interactions have shaped brewing methods, ingredient choices, and taste preferences found in kopitiams, and how tea serves as a shared social practice across communities in Singapore.
